Medicare Part A

What is Medicare Part A?

Medicare Part A, often referred to as "hospital insurance," provides coverage for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as those with certain disabilities or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It helps pay for inpatient hospital care, hospice services, and limited home health care.

At Chambliss Insurance, we help individuals better understand Medicare and how different coverage options work together to support their healthcare needs.

Coverage

What does Medicare Part A cover?

Medicare Part A covers the following hospital-related services.

Inpatient Hospital Care

Covers medically necessary care received after formal admission to a hospital — up to 90 days of inpatient care per benefit period, plus 60 lifetime reserve days. It also covers up to 190 lifetime days of care in a Medicare-certified psychiatric hospital.

Skilled Nursing Facility Care

Covers room and board, nursing services, medications, wound care, tube feedings, and other skilled services in a qualified SNF — up to 100 days per benefit period. Requires skilled nursing or therapy services and a qualifying hospital stay of at least three consecutive inpatient days before SNF admission.

Home Health Care

Covers medically necessary skilled nursing and therapy services for individuals who are homebound — up to 100 days of daily care or unlimited intermittent care visits when eligibility requirements are met. If you don't qualify under Part A, home health services may still be covered under Part B.

Hospice Care

Covers end-of-life care for individuals diagnosed with a terminal illness, including a range of supportive and palliative services. Coverage continues as long as a healthcare provider certifies that hospice care remains medically necessary.

Eligibility

Am I eligible for Medicare Part A?

You may qualify for Medicare Part A if you are age 65 or older and are a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Individuals under age 65 may also be eligible if they have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) disability benefits for at least 24 months.

Special eligibility rules apply to individuals with certain medical conditions, including end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). People diagnosed with ALS typically become eligible for Medicare Part A beginning in the first month they qualify for disability benefits.

Individuals with ESRD may qualify for Medicare Part A based on their treatment needs. Coverage can begin as early as the month of a kidney transplant — or earlier if hospitalization is required within the two months leading up to the transplant to prepare for the procedure.
